Learner Statement:
An estimated 20% of global water pollution is due to the dyeing process in the textile industry. Up to 85% of all textiles go to dumps each year, releasing microfibres into ground water and rivers. My sculpture represents how we can collectively reuse fabrics to support, save and admire our environment. It shows how reducing textile waste can be as simple as gifting fabric flowers or repurposing an old shirt into a top. Protecting nature isn’t just the job of big companies. It can be our job too, it should be everyone’s job. This work represents the collective failure of textile overconsumption and how instead we should focus on repurposing that old pair of jeans into a pocket or coasters or bracelets. The options and solutions are endless. So let’s change the way we look at old clothes, so we can save the lives of innocent animals. - Lexi and Ebony
