Material World
Craft School: Material World invites learners to explore the natural and human-made materials around them and how they relate to their own heritage, community or the place where they live. Enrol to take part in Craft School: Material World 2024 - 2025.
Video Resources
We collaborated with craft makers to create short films responding to the three Craft School: Material World briefs of Renewable Materials, Creative Mending, and Reclaim and Reuse. See inside their making spaces, watch their processes in action, hear about what inspires them and gain insight into how you could approach these briefs yourself.
Renewable Materials CPD Session
In this session, we explore the theme of Renewable Materials. Join Michele Gregson, from the National Society for Education in Art and Design, for a presentation on incorporating the ARAE (Anti-Racist Art Education) focus. This session also features a hands-on make-along led by artist Sam Ayre, featuring an activity centred on the theme of Renewable Materials.
Creative Mending CPD Session
In this session we explore the theme of Creative Mending. Join Paula Briggs, co-founder of AccessArt - a charity with the aim of furthering advancement in the visual arts. This session also features a hands-on make-along led by textile artist and researcher Ophelia Dos Santo, using embroidery materials and scrap fabric.
Reclaim and Reuse CPD Session
In this session we explore the theme of Reclaim and Reuse. Join Sam Kendall, Head of School Learning at the Eden Project, as she shares her insights and experiences in designing and delivering craft projects within alternative provision settings. The session also features a hands-on make-along led by artist Liaqat Rasul, using recycled materials that can be easily sourced from your recycling bin!
Reclaim and Reuse with Liaqat Rasul
This video features Liaqat Rasul, an artist specialising in collage, mixed media and sculpture. His work explores themes of multiculturalism, mental health and self-expression within different communities. Join Liaqat as he shares his process for transforming discarded materials into art.
Creative Mending with Maiko Tsutsumi
This film features Maiko Tsutsumi, an artist and curator trained in woodwork and Japanese lacquer. Join Maiko in exploring the importance of creative mending through the lens of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing.
Renewable Materials with Zoe Burt
This film features Zoe Burt, a designer and educator whose work explores the connection between ecology, botanical colour, activism and sustainability. Listen to Zoe talk about natural dyeing and working with renewable materials in your classrooms!

Renewable Materials Make-Along with Ella Bulley (CPD Archive, 2023-24)

Craft School: Yinka's Challenge ran from September 2022 to March 2023. The brief was set by Crafts Council trustee and multidisciplinary artist Yinka Ilori and centred on play, storytelling and empowerment.
