MEND on the move
Try your hand at visible mending, good old-fashioned darning, Sashiko and Boro inspired embroidery, as well as decorative patching with our MEND makers.
New for 2022 the touring MEND van is part of an award-winning project created by Lakeland Arts in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. MEND is a community-focused programme aimed at connecting people through creative collaboration and shared experiences.
All materials are provided. If you have a much-loved item of clothing you’d like to repair, bring it along. Why buy new, when you can mend? These are pop-up, drop-in sessions suitable for all ages. No experience required!
Events are being added regularly so check the What's On section of lakelandarts.org.uk/whats-on to see where the MEND van is heading next!

More about MEND
Lakeland Arts commissioned Matt Kelly of Plaey workshop to design a bespoke interior that was practical and multifunctional, converting the van into a mobile museum and making space. To transform the exterior of the van, outsider artist Steve Chapman was commissioned to create a playful set of drawings depicting people, objects and traditions that are synonymous with Cumbria. The colourful illustrations include Alfred Wainwright, Stan Laurel, Margaret Fell, Cumberland wrestlers and sheep farming alongside Lakeland Arts’ venues. Keep an eye out for the van which will be calling at villages, schools and libraries, as well as agricultural shows and music festivals around the region.
