How to prepare for presentations
- Make sure you have read and understood all the requirements of the presentation, including the duration. If you're not sure, it's best to ask, never assume.
- Always check the preferred file format and deadline with the meeting organisers.
- If your presentation requires an internet connection, double check what Wi-Fi options are available and prepare a backup option (e.g mobile data) for potential tech issues.
- Take a backup of your presentation on a USB memory stick or hard drive.
- Rehearse in advance so you can be more confident and present in the moment.
- Practice your presentation from start to finish and time yourself speaking.
- If the presentation will take place online, you might also record yourself to pick up on body language, background noise and distractions (e.g busy background or poor lighting on Zoom) and audiovisual issues.
- Self-edit! If it’s a 10-minute presentation, try to limit your slides to 5 high-quality relevant images with minimal text.
- Keep the presentation engaging – do not just read out the text on the slides.
- Prepare questions for the organisers to avoid any fumbling at the end of your discussion. By asking them a question, you'll appear enthusiastic and interested in the opportunity.
- It's okay to take notes along if you need them.
